Newborn FAQ

Below are a few of the most common questions regarding lifestyle newborn photography! Please feel free to contact us if you have additional questions! We are happy to help!

I love the idea of this natural style of newborn shoots, but I also had my heart set on a sleeping baby portrait of my newborn in a cute hat and heirloom blanket. Can this still happen?

Great question!  The short answer is yes! Sometimes when we arrive parents will have special items such as a blanket they may have been gifted or maybe even a cute hat or dainty headband they ordered from Etsy. Sports team items are also very popular. We always do our very best to creatively incorporate some of these items that are near and dear to your heart while maintaining the overall feel of your session!  We also keep some of our swaddles and other goodies on hand so don’t worry if you don’t have anything listed above!  Remember, our goal is to have a relaxed, natural, and free flowing album to present to you with the main focus being on your connection and the tender moments between the amazing new life you created along with any members of the family (furry ones included :). Our wish is to fill your gallery full of memories for you to remember down the road, the way your world was in that very moment. So what this means, is while we attempt to incorporate items that help depict your life and family,  the session wouldn’t be centered around transitioning baby into multiple outfits and such to avoid images from looking overly staged.  Listen, we love seeing  images of a squishy brand spanking new baby in studio style poses and props just as much as the next guy! They are adorable and it is a great style of photography that we admire. It is just a different style than what we specialize in!  That sweet baby of yours is the only prop we need! Take a look at our newborn portfolio to get an idea of what you can expect. There are also a lot of sessions featured on the blog that will give you feel for what your final images may look like.

What do I need to do to prepare for my session?

Please anticipate being part of the session. Trust us, we are mamas too and have both given birth. We know a new mom doesn’t always feel up to being photographed and that is ok. We have tricks up our sleeves where we can still make the session happen and not have your face in the pictures if you do not wish to be. This is something we can talk about the day of and see how you are feeling. Please be dressed and able to at least hold your baby so we can still photograph you together in some degree. We do hope you will keep in mind that this sessions is for you, your baby and your family to have as an extra visual reminder of this special and pivotal time in your life. They do not have to be published for anyone to see.

Since your house is our backdrop there isn’t much for you to do! We will find the best light and go from there. Typically we try to get shots in the nursery as well as the master bedroom or another room with great light. We may ask for a boppy to lay a blanket on in order to capture alone shots of the baby. We will bring a few blankets, swaddles, a headband or a hat! We have you covered there! If you wanted to pump up the heat and make sure its toasty warm for little Miss. or Mr. Naked, that would help keep them cozy and happy!

Can my other child(ren) be part of the session?

Yes!!! In fact- we encourage that!  Remember what we said above? The focus is capturing the bonding moments and the sibs must be documented too! We do ask to schedule your session at a time you do not plan on having visitors coming over for various reasons.

When should we do our session?

Ideally we like to do our newborn sessions within the first 10 days of life. That said, with the focus being on the bond with the baby rather than only sleeping shots, we can do this session within the first 2 weeks of life and be just fine. We like to arrive as close to the baby’s feeding and nap time as possible. If siblings will be participating we recommend considering their nap time and needs as well. As mentioned above, we highly suggest setting our appointment on a day that you do not anticipate visitors. We find that the less distractions there are,  the easier it is for our clients to feel comfortable and candid. Typically we conduct newborn sessions during the week so visitors aren’t usually a big problem!

How will you know our baby was born?

Please tell us when your baby arrives. We will then discuss a good date for one of us to come to your home to meet the newbie and make the magic happen!

What should we wear?

Well…don’t worry about baby here. Typically we swaddle him/her or keep her in a diaper. Or if baby is super sleepy we may even get alone shots naked! As for the rest of the fam- comfortable, light, and coordinated (not matchy-matchy). Try not to wear too many patterns, don’t forget, we want the focus on the baby and your interaction. 🙂

What can I expect from start to finish for our session?

So once one of us arrives we will kick off our shoes so to speak, ask for a tour of the house (to find the best lighting), chat about anything we didn’t cover ahead of time (like your baby’s schedule for the day). Then we will probably fall in love with the new baby, hope to become best friends with any sibling(s), and get started! We take the baby’s lead most of the time. Not all babies will fall asleep and stay asleep for the entire session. That is the beauty of lifestyle- all of that is ok. Oh! And your baby might (most likely) pee, and/or poop on our things or even ourselves. Let us tell you now, your child will not be the first nor will they be the last, we can assure you! So please don’t be embarrassed or feel the need to appologize! We have stain remover waiting on us at home! During the session itself, we will give you direction as you need it. We don’t just show up and stare at you until you all do something sweet, we promise lol! We do try to keep it real and offer some general suggestions. Don’t forget, our goal is to make this as stress free and natural feeling as possible! If the baby needs to be fed or changed then go for it! We will probably keep shooting because then again- that’s real life!!

*If there are additional children joining in the fun, we are happy to start with the sibling and family shots should your kiddos need to go off to school and/or take a nap!
